Yuri & Johanna Alvarado’s families have been growing coffee in the mountains of Matagalpa for over 4 generations. Both sets of parents lost their farms during the revolution of 1979 and had to emigrate to the United States of America (where they met). They spent the next 33 years raising their family, always with the longing of returning to Nicaragua to continue the farming traditions of their ancestors.

Four years ago, the dream of owning their own coffee farm in Nicaragua finally came true. They were blessed to buy a beautiful little farm called La Laguna due to its pond by the side of the road. Later re-named it Talisman after Yuri’s dad’s old farm before the revolution. The farm is the home to several sloth families, living along squirrels, guatusas (agoutis), guardatinajas (pacas), lizards, snakes, turtles, fish, frogs, all kinds of bugs, thousands of butterflies, and countless birds living from all the fruit trees planted as shade for the coffee. Among the fruit trees you will find: oranges, tangerines, limes, sour oranges, sweet limes, grapefruits, mangos, avocados, bananas, jocotes, passion fruit, guavas, guanabanas, cacao, guayabas, water pears, matasanos, fruta de pan, and mamones among others. The farm has five natural springs, three mountain creeks which crisscross the property and serve as habitat to another myriad of species.

El Talisman is comprised of 35 acres of total land area. 20 acres of coffee in production under shade10 acres forest and preservation of rivers. 4 acres being reforested with búcaro and walnut 1 acre infrastructure and drying patio.

The farm uses a 100% Proprietary Honey-Natural Process, resulting in a better quality cup with longer shelf life; and the best part, absolutely no water contamination, as there is no water used in the wet milling process. Thus saving over 500,000 liters of water from being contaminated per year.

This year we decided to bring our coffee to our second home in Austin Texas, and with the help of our son Fernando and daughter Johanna they were able to a accomplish this milestone.

Farm direct purchase. Recommend for drip coffee, pourover, espresso, and cold brew coffee.
